11.4 Evaluation of final script

I think our final script sticks fairly well to the outlines of the brief as it would be a suitable drama for Amazon Prime and I think the style of the programme means that the audience could ‘binge’ watch the series or watch an one episode at a time and it would still work well. The brief stated that it should be a 10 part series and therefore we haven’t given too much away in the first episode and so the narrative is quite slow which I think would make it appeal more to the older end of the target audience.
We faced some problems during the script writing process, which was finding a realistic excuse for Masons character to go to the coffee shop. In the end we decided it would be best to change the café to a corner shop and have Mason go to it first instead of work. Overall this reduced the number of scenes needed to film and so makes the production a little easier. In terms of strengths in this process, I think we all worked well together in discussing changes and issues with the script as we were all on the same level in terms of what we had visualised for the production. This made it easier for a final draft to be written up and completed fairly quickly.
The original target audience of the series was quite broad so there wasn’t really a particular area of age that we were concentrating on when writing the script. However I think due to the narrative being quite slow and the age of the main characters that the older generation would probably enjoy it more. The recurring flashback scenes (with a younger Mason and Ellie) and the realism of the problems faced in the series could also draw in a younger audience.

Since the original draft of the script there have been quite a lot of changes. For example in the first scene, we have changed the setting from night-time to daytime. We also thought carefully about the dialogue here and changed some bits to make it more realistic that two drunk teenagers would be talking. (These changes came after we originally had to change Mason and Ellie from very young children playing in the garden). We also changed the idea of Mason going to a coffee shop to a corner shop as we thought it would be more realistic for him to buy tea for everyone. We also cut out the part of him going into work then leaving again.

11.2: 3 Ideas for a TV Series

You need to generate 3 detailed ideas for a new long form UK TV drama that uses the crime genre as a starting point. The program is being commissioned by Amazon Prime in order to attract a new customers drawing on the  audience being cultivated for high quality crime drama - particularly from the states and Europe.

The show will be released as a complete series and viewers can choose to watch each episode individually or as a whole series.  The format of the show is 10 episodes of 55 minutes each, it must have a narrative structure that runs throughout the whole series.

The show will need to have both a male and female lead actor.

1. Oak Street

2. Castaway

3. Elizabeth

11.1: Film Script - Little Miss Sunshine

Style - The style of the script is quite detailed in terms of character description and stage directions for the opening of the film. Probably because they want to introduce the characters according to the strongest points of their personality. There's a lot of dialogue as this film relies a lot of the characters interacting with each other to tell the story.

Content - The content of the script is basically showing a struggling family trying to get to a beauty contest on the other side of America. They encounter a number of problems on the trip but which they have to solve The clashing personalities of the characters adds to the comedy as they try to get to their destination.

Narrative Structure - The opening of the film is focused on introducing the key characters and their backgrounds/interests. We first see them all together at a family dinner where their problems and clashing personalities become obvious. From this scene the film is set on the road as they try to get the the beauty contest encountering.

Genre - The genre of this film is comedy. They use elements of quite dark comedy such as the subject of Frank's suicide attempt and the Grandpa's death. However most of the film is light comedy which I think a large market of people can find funny.

Target Audience - The film is rated 15 in the UK but I it's main target audience would be from about 15-40. Due to the age range of characters and the difference in their personalities I think a theres something in the film that people of all genders can enjoy.

11.1: Radio Script - Hangdog

An extract from the script of 'Hangdog' by Cat Jones, a radio drama.

Style - This script has a lot less detail in terms of description than there is in TV/Film scripts. Any description that is in this script are there to show where sound effects will be used. Being a radio script, it relies a lot more on dialogue and sound effects to set and image for the audience.

Content - In this particular scene, the two characters are talking about a prisoner that killed himself, its clear that they both have different opinions on the suicide.

Genre - This is a crime drama

Target Audience - Judging by the
